Preparing A Spiced Cacao Drink
Cacao has been enjoyed with spices for centuries throughout Mesoamerica. While modern cacao drinks vary widely, many traditional preparations used in celebrations and ceremonies include warming spices that complement cacao’s natural bitterness and depth.
This recipe creates a balanced spiced cacao drink using Kampura ceremonial cacao.
Ingredients (1 serving)
-
2 tablespoons Kampura Organic Ceremonial Cacao (chopped from the block or use our pieces)
-
1/2 cup liquid
Spice options (choose one or combine lightly):
-
1 pinch cinnamon
-
1 pinch cayenne pepper
-
1 pinch chili powder
-
1 pinch cardamom
-
1 pinch turmeric
Optional:
-
honey or maple syrup
-
vanilla extract
-
pinch of sea salt

Instructions
1. Warm the liquid
Heat the liquid gently in a small saucepan.
2. Add cacao
Add chopped cacao or cacao flakes.
3. Add spices
Add a small pinch of your preferred spices.
Start lightly—spices should enhance the cacao rather than dominate it.
4. Whisk until smooth
Stir or whisk until the cacao melts completely.
5. Taste and adjust
Add sweetener if desired.
Flavor Pairing Ideas
Some combinations that work particularly well:
-
Cinnamon + vanilla
-
Cayenne + honey
-
Cardamom + maple syrup
-
Turmeric + coconut milk
Why Spices Pair Well With Cacao
Cacao naturally contains aromatic compounds similar to those found in spices, which is why cinnamon, chili, and cardamom enhance chocolate so well.
