How to Prepare Ceremonial Cacao at Home
A simple recipe using Kampura Organic Ceremonial Cacao Blocks or Flakes
Ceremonial cacao is a drink made from pure cacao paste that has been fermented, dried, lightly roasted, and stone-ground. Unlike cocoa powder, it contains the full natural cocoa butter of the bean and is typically melted into hot water or milk to create a rich cacao beverage.
This is one of the most versatile drinks you can prepare at home. With just a few ingredients and a few minutes of gentle heating, you can create a cup that ranges from rich and European-style thick drinking chocolate to a lighter, daily cacao ritual.
At Kampura, our cacao is fermented, lightly roasted, and stone-ground at origin in Guatemala, creating a smooth paste that melts easily into water or milk.
You can prepare this recipe using either:
-
Kampura Organic Ceremonial Cacao Blocks (chop with a knife)
-
Kampura Organic Ceremonial Cacao Pieces (pre-broken to melt quickly)
Both formats are exactly the same cacao—only the shape is different.
Basic Ceremonial Cacao Recipe
Ingredients (1 serving)
-
2 generous tablespoons Kampura Organic Ceremonial Cacao
-
Finely chopped cacao block or cacao flakes
-
1/2 cup preferred liquid
Liquid options include:
-
Water (traditional preparation)
-
Whole milk
-
Oat milk
-
Almond milk
-
Coconut milk
-
Half-and-half or cream (for a very rich drink)
Optional:
-
Sweetener (honey, maple syrup, or sugar)
-
Pinch of salt
-
Spices (see variations below)
Instructions
-
Heat the liquid gently
Warm your liquid in a small saucepan over low heat.
Do not boil—cacao melts best when heated slowly. -
Add cacao
Add 2 generous tablespoons of chopped cacao or flakes to the warm liquid. -
Whisk until smooth
Stir continuously or whisk until the cacao is fully melted and the drink becomes smooth and glossy. -
Blend if desired
For extra creaminess, blend with: -
a handheld frother
-
immersion blender
-
standard blender
-
Serve immediately
Pour into a mug and enjoy warm.
European-Style Drinking Chocolate (Thick & Intense)
For a classic European drinking chocolate texture, use less liquid.
Ingredients
-
2 generous tablespoons Kampura cacao
-
1/3 cup liquid
For maximum decadence, try:
-
heavy cream
-
half-and-half
-
whole milk
Serving suggestion
Serve in a small espresso cup or demitasse, just as thick drinking chocolate is often served in Spain or Italy.
The result is a deep, concentrated chocolate flavor with a velvety texture.
American-Style Drinking Chocolate (Balanced & Smooth)
For a more traditional mug of drinking chocolate:
Ingredients
-
2 generous tablespoons Kampura cacao
-
1/2 cup liquid
Serve in a standard coffee mug.
This style produces a smooth, comforting chocolate drink that’s perfect for mornings or evenings.
Spiced Cacao Variations
Cacao pairs beautifully with spices used throughout Mesoamerican culinary traditions.
Try adding a small pinch of:
-
cinnamon
-
cayenne pepper
-
chili powder
-
turmeric
-
cardamom
-
nutmeg
-
vanilla
Start small—spices should enhance the cacao rather than overpower it.
Optional Sweeteners
Kampura cacao contains no sugar or additives, so you can customize sweetness to taste.
Common options include:
-
honey
-
maple syrup
-
panela or raw cane sugar
-
coconut sugar
-
agave syrup
Many people enjoy ceremonial cacao unsweetened once they become familiar with its natural flavor.
Spiked Cacao (Adult Variation)
For an evening treat, add a small splash of:
-
dark rum
-
whisky
-
tequila
-
coffee liqueur
Alcohol should be added after heating, just before serving.
Tips for the Best Ceremonial Cacao

Chop blocks finely
If using a cacao block, chop into small pieces so it melts quickly.
Use gentle heat
High heat can cause cacao to separate. Low heat creates a smoother drink.
Blend for froth
A frother or blender produces a beautiful foam.
Adjust thickness
Add more liquid if you prefer a lighter drink.
Why Kampura Cacao Melts So Well
Because Kampura cacao is stone-ground into a pure paste, the natural cocoa butter remains fully intact. When gently heated, it melts easily into liquid, creating a drink that is rich, smooth, and deeply aromatic.
Every cup begins in our organic cacao agroforestry system in Guatemala, where cacao grows beneath a canopy of native trees.
A Daily Ritual or a Special Moment
Some people drink ceremonial cacao each morning as a coffee alternative.
Others prepare it slowly as an evening ritual.
Either way, the process is simple:
Heat. Stir. Sip.
A small moment of calm—rooted in cacao’s long history as a treasured drink.
