Genuine Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla)
Genuine mahogany is one of the most respected hardwoods in the world—valued for its stability, workability, and warm tonal character in guitars and other stringed instruments. At Kampura, we grow Swietenia macrophylla in its native region as part of a regenerative agroforestry system, where it also plays a critical role as living canopy for our cacao.
Our natural forest pushed us to research the native trees that once defined this landscape. We started with high-value timber species under the greatest pressure from illegal logging and over-extraction. These are species that were once abundant here but are now difficult to find in the few remaining natural forests.
Why mahogany belongs in agroforestry
At Kampura, mahogany helps make cacao possible. As the trees mature, they rebuild the canopy structure, buffer wind and heat, and create the filtered shade that cacao prefers. It also strengthens habitat, stabilizes soils, and supports watershed resilience across the farm.
Managed in its native habitat
Over time, we’ve learned how to manage mahogany plantings for long-term forest health—thoughtful spacing, selective pruning, and monitoring that supports strong growth without simplifying the ecosystem. The trees are thriving in the environment they evolved in.
Kampura’s forestry work received the 2019 “1st Place; Forest Management” from Guatemala’s national forest authority, INAB.
